A mid-century modern hotel in the heart of downtown, The Durham is a vibrant destination, inspired by the spirit of its namesake city, Durham in North Carolina (USA).
Featuring modern interiors and local collaborations, the rooms at The Durham have been designed by Los Angeles-based firm Commune to be warm and residential, making guests feel right at home.
The building The Durham is housed in and the land it sits on are historic parts of the city. The original building on was a hotel built in 1907, which later became a hospital, a business school, and a tavern. That structure was demolished in 1938 to make way for an art deco movie theater, which was purchased by Home Savings and Loan in 1966. The bank tore down the theater to construct the unique, modern building with the saw-tooth façade that still stands today.
As The Durham, the hotel has been fully renovated having now 53 rooms, including a 1050-square-foot penthouse complete with its own private terrace. From carpets inspired by local hero Anni Albers to furniture chosen to swing naturally with the building’s curves, all of the design decisions made by firm Commune Design embody the spirit of Durham: “creative, entrepreneurial and fiercely independent.” There is also meeting and event space for up to 50 people, a fitness studio, rooftop yoga, and bicycle rentals.
