Barbara Sallick, the co founder of Waterworks, recently published her latest book, The Perfect Bath.
“I have 40 years of experience thinking about the bath, talking about the bath, learning about the bath and intimately understanding what needs to go into a bathroom. I’ve thought about how to make bathrooms feel more or less comfortable and how you arrange your products. I felt it was just my moment to put that all in a place. You have a moment and you just say it’s time.” said Barbara Sallick to an interview released by the Interior Style Hunter.
In this article we highlight 5 important topics in the vision of Barbara when it comes to create the bathroom of our dreams:
Design tips for a small bathroom
The less the better. Small bathrooms aren’t used to have too many things, and so it is important to think about three points: what you use, how you use it, how much of it you use it. Proportion is the key point and so we need to have in mind balance vs scale. If these points aren’t taking into consideration in a small bath then what happens is it just feels terrible and you go in and feel claustrophobic. The advise of Barbara is to think about what feels classic, elegant and timeless.
Colours in the bathroom
She admits to be “the Queen of White” but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love colour in the bath. If a client wants to have colour in the bathroom area he shouldn’t be afraid of using it. It is important to think of colour in terms of surfaces on the walls and floors. The jewel colours are the colours of faucets, so “if I had a navy blue bath, I probably would want nickel“. She believes that colour and fittings have to be aligned and to think long term since it will be a change that can endure for 10 or 15 years.
Technology in the bathroom
At Waterworks they have incorporated into their assortment that feel like they are within their curated assortment. “There’s an electronic shower valve which is cool. It looks like a light switch that measures 3 x 4 inches and it’s on the outside of the shower. You press your button, you set the temperature and walk in. You can do that with the thermostat as well. Recently, we’ve added some shower heads with lights. It’s something new to the bathroom.”
Making bathrooms comfortable
A chair in the bathroom can just add that touch and it is preferable to have this type of more furniture-oriented piece that actually nothing. Barbara has a really small bathroom, although it it filled with a little telescope stool, an orchid and a pile of towels. She considers that rugs can also add the comfort to this space.
How to use art in the bathroom
“I think a bathroom, particularly a master bathroom, is a great place for photographs.” The art in the bathroom will actually depend on the kind of bathroom that the person is idealizing and the personal taste. “The one thing I recommend for every bathroom is to clean it up. Everybody has five more lipsticks than they need and seven more bars of soap. Just have a pretty little tray with about five things that you need every day and keep it clean.”
