More than 20 years ago, while they were students at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Studio KO architects first came together. After falling in love, Olivier Marty and Karl Fournier started their company, which is today renowned for its handcrafted, rustic minimalism. Fournier argues that rather than eliminating the human touch, it should be emphasized. It is impossible to avoid process imperfections. You can only tell if you can feel it, even if it is our language. Yves Saint Laurent’s Musée in Marrakech, Balmain boutiques in New York and Los Angeles, and André Balazs’ Chiltern Firehouse hotel in London are just a few of the international projects the design team has worked on.
In 2001, Pierre Yovanovitch opened his own studio in Paris after switching from designing garments for Pierre Cardin to designing interiors. Yovanovitch has a special passion for traveling back in time and giving antique structures a modern facelift since entering the interior design industry. The AD100 designer says, “I frequently work on 17th- and 18th-century residences, but I believe they must live in our day.”
The exuberant native Swede Beata Heuman, who trained with British fashion icon Nicky Haslam, feels that “the best design blends form, function, and personality.” A bed perched atop white-wood lion’s paws is just one example of Heuman’s mischievous, family-friendly aesthetic, which she describes as combining “a Scandinavian attention to detail with the desire to create something unique and characterful.” Custom furnishings meet fabrics and wallpaper with a decidedly merry disposition in the youthful rooms she conjures from Nantucket, Massachusetts, to Hamburg, Germany, to the United Kingdom (a dining room appears to be entirely encased in pencilled doodles).
Francis Sultana created a special line of furniture in memory of his late mother Marie-François to mark the tenth anniversary of his design business. According to Sultana, “My mother was, if you will, my first client; she permitted me to test out looks on her house.” As you turn the pages, two themes become clear: first, Sultana’s homeland Malta’s great influence on the Mediterranean and classicism; and second, his love of the fine arts, which explains why he attracts art collectors from all over the world as clients.
It is hardly surprise that Vincent Van Duysen was influenced by the work of architects like Luis Barragán, Le Corbusier, and Louis Kahn given the almost monastic purity that marks his quietly magnificent works. The simply furnished rooms of the Belgian designer have been given depth by subtle finishing details like silky plaster finishes, dry wood textures, and hazy colors. Several rooms at Kim Kardashian’s Calabasas house and the Winery VV by Vinetiq are among Vincent Van Duysen’s most well-known creations. He also designed the Kvadrat store in Milan.
