Word of Mouth was created by the architect Valentina Audrito, who is half Italian and half Greek, but has lived in various countries. She decided to establish her company in Bali in 2004. Word Of Mouth team includes architects, graphic designers, project managers and makers of all sorts with whom they built a collaboration throughout the years. Constructed overlooking a dense forest, Chameleon Villa sits on an acre of land characterized by a steep contour with an 11-meter difference of level between the arrival area and the river below. Given such a spectacular location, the challenge of Word of Mouth was to create an architecture that truly connected with its surroundings and that integrated well with the topography of the site. Word of Mouth worked on the idea of ‘landscaped architecture’, by blurring the boundaries between natural and built environments. The result is a composition of volumes that are clean and modern but at the same time, they feel ‘earthy’ and organic. The material palette is largely comprised of natural and locally sourced materials, meaning that not only could local suppliers and artisans be supported by this initiative, but it also minimized the home’s carbon footprint. Green systems considered for this project, besides passive cooling and sustainable materials selection, have been the use of solar panels to produce electricity and a water recycling and rainwater collection system for garden irrigation.
Wonderland Uluwatu is a cliff-top events space that includes a reception, 3 bridal suites, wedding ceremony stages and an infinity pool area with a lounge tent space connected to it. The project grew organically in different phases having started with just a pool in 2013. Subsequently, buildings have been positioned around the pool area taking into consideration views, flow and circulation. The bridal suites as well as the guest bathrooms at Wonderland Uluwatu have been designed to complement the other elements of this project by Word of Mouth which include a Joglo wooden structure originally from Java. Local materials and makers have been used to create a contemporary events space that is true to its local surroundings.
Word of Mouth provided interiors design services and partial architectural design consultancy for this house project designed originally by GM Architects. The clients were after a mid-century look for their home therefore selection of materials and overall elements followed the brief. Word of Mouth worked with a natural palette that involved lots of wood and stones everywhere. Two simple gable-shaped volumes of glass are shrouded in horizontal western red cedar wood slats, providing a delicate, layered interior experience while alluding to traditional barn forms in the region. The two primary sections of the house create a dialogue between public and private life: the southern form for cooking, relaxing, and poolside dining, and the northern form for more intimate bedroom and bathing spaces.
Chili Hilly is located in the artists’ enclave of Sayan and sits directly overlooking the Ayung River valley with the volcanoes in sight just beyond. The house was built on a relatively small plot attached to an existing hotel area made of traditional looking buildings therefore one of the biggest challenges of the Word of Mouth was to design something that would blend well with the surroundings yet achieve their goal of creating a contemporary home. Word of Mouth, therefore, developed a shell that from the outside looks like just another building with terracotta tiles and a pitched roof but once inside it becomes a tropical version of a contemporary loft space where free-standing volumes on different levels get incorporated under one giant roof.
Tantangan Villa sits on 6,500 m2 of cliff front piece of land located on the southwest coast of Bali. The plot has incredible views west facing towards the beach on one side and on the northeast side towards the forest and volcanos. The challenge to Word of Mouth was to create a villa that felt both compacted and cosy and that at the same time would take advantage as much as possible of all the views without feeling too imposing from the beach. The design utilises a layout where the buildings are formed around the central courtyard, creating intimate internal spaces between them, and more open spaces towards the perimeter. Because of the remote location of the project, it was important that the Villa could operate self-sufficiently. To achieve this, a number of green systems and design approaches were adopted. The splitting of building forms created natural ventilation through the site, as well as through each individual building effectively cooling the spaces and reducing the strain on the system of solar panels and batteries. The project demonstrates a concept of utilising traditional materials to create modern lines, always with a strong relationship between interior and exterior spaces, and a considered balance of light and shadow.
The Boutique Hotel is comprised of seven villas and a separate bar/lobby area, all laid along with a stretched, narrow piece of land in the middle of bustling Seminyak. The challenge to Word of Mouth in this project was to create spacious units on very small plots which would maintain privacy from each other and from the neighbouring sites. Each of the villa layouts is unique, however, they all follow a formula of having the bedrooms contained in glass boxes, while the rest of the areas is accommodated in open pavilions. The idea of containing specific functions within separate pavilions is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Balinese architecture. As a response to the unusual land shape, a change in levels is used in the layout of each villa to create filters between different zones. Each of the villas retains a similar base palette of polished concrete, bangkirai timber, roughly finished plaster, white pebble wash, Japanese tatami, and natural and painted bamboo ceilings. Black and off-white terrazzo elements are introduced in the bathrooms and kitchens alongside custom made ceramic sinks.
Lalaland Bali is a refurbishment of an existing residence originally designed by Mauro Tomasi as an amalgamation of three old ‘joglo’ houses hailing from the neighbouring island of Java. The house has been adapted by Word of Mouth to suit the needs of their family. The overall approach to the design for this property has been an organic one developed throughout the years during which many different phases of renovations and updates took place. As a general criterion, Word of Mouth combined the more traditional look and feel of the structure with contemporary additions as well as eclectic art and furniture pieces custom made by them or collected in different parts of the world. Lalaland Bali is first accessed via a garden courtyard, featuring a large circular pond and an angular deck. This area works as a filter for visitors from the parking area into the open main living space. Once through the courtyard, a massive egg structure that functions as the guest bathroom appears being just another example of Word of Mouth ongoing experimentation with eggs in their designs.
Seascape is a 5 bedroom oceanfront property on the island of Nusa Lembongan. The clients’ brief centred around the idea of creating a “Mediterranean feel” to the villa so Word of Mouth approached the design using for the most part clean soft white volumes with concrete or pebbled floors. Bamboo and concrete screens provide privacy to the villa from the outside and protect it from the light. Materials used have an organic feel and are accentuated by the extensive use of bamboo screens to balance the very contemporary lines of the building. The elongated feeling of the pool within the land has been balanced by introducing a circular deck all around it. The combination of round and square shapes continues across the whole project whether it’s in the pond design or in wall openings. For the Interior works, Word of Mouth has combined a selection of items purchased by other designers and local shops with a whole range of pieces custom made by them for the project. The colour palette ranges between blues and aqua greens.
The property was taken over by architects Liddicoat and Goldhill whose work was shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA House of the Year and winning many other design awards. When Word of Mouth took it over, the house was adapted and decorated to fit their family life. The approach chosen towards the interior works has been one of contrast and balance of the industrial and raw materials look that the architecture presents. Word of Mouth opted for a colourful, eclectic atmosphere where furniture pieces from different styles are matched together and emphasis has been put on the use of various colours curtains and carpets everywhere in order to warm up the spaces. Plants have also been introduced throughout the house to bring nature in.
This Word of Mouth project is a renovation of an old flat in the city’s Sarria area. Originally fractioned in many enclosed small spaces, the apartment felt dark and with a very poor flow between the different areas. Word of Mouth, therefore, reorganised the internal layout of the apartment to accommodate the needs of their clients and opened up the floor plan by demolishing some of the partitions and by redesigning the spaces and circulation of the same. In this way, Word of Mouth achieved a much better interconnectedness between areas and as a result, the flat gained greatly in the quality of spaces also due to a substantial increase of natural lighting. Word of Mouth adopted a neutral colour palette for what concerns the finishing materials throughout the apartment and combined it with colourful curtains and soft furnishing everywhere which add life and softness. Most items have been designed and custom made for the project as well green elements like for example a lit-up planter above the island in the kitchen.
